What are NJTP's classes like?
Our group tennis lessons combine a number of important elements:
Fitness—A portion of each class is spent warming up and doing strength-building exercises targeted toward tennis.
Technique—Coaches give instruction and correction on proper tennis techniques.
Drills—We use many types of different competitive and cooperative drills to reinforce proper technique, shot selection, and other aspects of the game.
Game Play—Students play a variety of different games that focus on different shots and strategies.
Match Play—We play sets, sometimes with modified rules that help students work on different aspects of their game.
Our classes are structured around a lesson plan that covers the fundamentals of the game such as.
-
Ground Strokes
-
Volleys
-
Serves and Return of Serves
-
Lobs and Overheads
-
Singles and Doubles match play
We focus on a given area each week in order to properly learn and improve techniques.
At NJTP, we use the USTA 10-and-Under format (also called Red/Orange/Green ball) in all of our beginner through intermediate-level junior classes. Our Red and Orange Ball classes are designed for kids who have never or have had very little tennis instruction. We strongly believe that it is the best way to safely develop young players’ fundamentals of the game. For more information, see our 10-and-Under Tennis page.
The instructor may recommend a student to move to a different class, if needed and available, depending on their level.
Students should bring water, a towel, a hat/visor, non-marking tennis shoes, and their own rackets. NJTP provides balls and supplies. There will be rackets available if needed.
